And why? Why do people do that? Smile their heart out even when their end is near, even when they know that their feelings aren't getting any closure. What's up with that smile on the face, that warmth in their chest?

This smiling rugged guy in the picture knows that he is doomed, that love/affection/bonding of any sort with this girl will cost him his life, that he should ideally not break out of his shell and reach out for this girl, this stupid little girl in this stupid little dress.

Mahabir Bhati was neither a Shahrukh nor a khan in his defence, he was a wanted who knew that his life ain't long, all he wanted was to break free of his shell like Veera did.

Before his story ends, he wanted to reach out for that girl before being killed(which couldn't have been avoided and he knew it too), that girl, that stupid little girl in that stupid little turban.

No matter what the reality is there is this one part of our heart which still believes in hope, in sunshine, in life and in Mahabir's case, his hope was that he would make it out alive out of all the mess he was in and start a life, a family with Veera(His first enquiry was if she was ready to bear his children).

 And how does he eventually die? Getting up from his sleep, coming out of their hut(his shell) and being shot dead while reaching out for that girl, when he had almost built his temporary paradise with her, at a place where his only focus was to reach out for that girl sitting on the rock-top, that stupid little girl on that stupid little rock. 

The last thing he had for Veera was a smile, a faint curve smile.
